At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His life was pure, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.

One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as appropriate today read more as it was then.
